What does it do?

chc_forum by Zach Davis of Cast Iron Coding[1] is a discussion board extension. Its feature list includes:

discussion threads
images for users (sometimes called avatars)
new posts via email (it is selectable which conferences should be watched)
user profiles
frontend-users as administrators (with the ability to edit and delete posts)
semiautomatically delete posts older than x-days
_native_ TYPO3-forum, no creepy adaption
flexible permissions system based on frontend users and frontend groups.

But one of the best things about chc_forum is, it is still under active development, Zach Davis makes heavy use of relativly new TYPO3-technologies like flexform. The forum is relatively easy to install and can be set up with no knowledge of typoscript, since almost all the configuration is done via the flexform.
