Hosting Overview

There are tons of webhosts to choose from with most hosts having similar configurations and ranging from $3/month and up. Remember, the cheapest is not always the best especially if you have a lot of downtime and performance is slow.

Most webhosts will have a L.A.M.P. (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Perl) setup but for a bit more Windows is also available.

Webhosting can be split into four broad categories:

  • Single domain virtual server hosting
  • Reseller virtual server hosting
  • Virtual Private Server
  • Dedicated server hosting

Single domain virtual server hosting ($3-$25/month)

With virtual hosting your website shares a server with other websites. This is usually not a problem if your site does not have much traffic and the hosting company does not overload the server with too many users. Server configuration and behavior is not easily changed because a)users usually don't have root access and b) changes would affect all users on that server. However, with the use of .htaccess files some local configuration is possible (which is usually adequate).

Recommended for single website with low traffic

Reseller virtual server hosting ($20-$50/month)

This is very similar to the single domain virtual server but users have the ability to create more than one domain/website. These are called reseller packages because many use these packages to resell single domain hosting to other users. This is also very convienent for developers who would like to manage multiple sites but don't want to signup for a new account each time. Many of these reseller packages include "Control Panel" software which help manage disk quotas, domain names, databases and email accounts. Again, many reseller accounts can reside on the same machine and root access is not given.

Recommended to developers who would like to manage low traffic multiple sites or offer hosting to their clients.

Unfortunately - at least for the reseller accounts - automatic installation of Typo3 through cPanel does not work.

Virtual Private Server ($40-$100/month)

The big distinction here is that users have root access and users only share the server with a handful of people (i.e. 4 people on a server). The server is split into equal sizes and users get a proportionate amount of resources from the server.

Because the cost of Dedicated Servers has come down so much in the last few years, using Virtual Private Servers (VPS) is becoming less popular. The idea behind VPS was to make expensive dedicated servers more affordable and to bridge the gap between virtual single domain hosting and dedicated server hosting. But with some budget hosting companies offering dedicated server for under $50/month the justification for a VPS is not there.

Many suppliers are charging from $10 - $30(unmanaged) per month making VPS a very attractive proposition for those who need the flexibility that shared hosting does not allow.

Dedicated Server ($50-$350+/month)

In this case you have your own dedicated server (your own machine) which you share with no one else. Full root access is given and often a control panel to administer your server.

With dedicated servers there is a distinction made between managed and unmanaged servers. An unmanaged server means all system administration and configuration must be done by the user. This usually assumes some Unix System Administration ability but comes at a significant cost savings. Managed servers (there are different levels so be sure to check what "managed" means from the company you are dealing with) users will be able to ask on site support staff and system administrators for upgrades, configuration and tuning.

Recommended for developers who have one or many high traffic sites.

What works best for TYPO3

TYPO3 works best on it's own dedicated server. From custom configuration of ImageMagick to various security concerns associated with hosting on a virtual server, anybody with a high traffic, mission critical web site should use a dedicated server. This does not mean that the two virtual server hosting options above are completely out of the question, in fact many TYPO3 developers use virtual hosting without problems. But let's just remember that TYPO3 is a enterprise-level Content Management System and is developed from the standpoint of running on its own server.

Cheap/Bargain

Typo3 web hosting starting at $4.95 per month (PayPal is also accepted) with no contracts and no hidden fees. Everything you need for hosting your Typo3 CMS, 2,000MB Disk space, 50 GB Transfer, MySQL Database, Subdomains, POP3/IMAP eMail addresses (Unlimited), etc...

Costs are €3.99 a month. Disk space (500MB), mysql db(500x), subdomains(500x), POP3/IMAP eMail addresses (500x), SSH access, etc... more than you need for a start. You can install numerous programs including Typo3 with just a click through cPanel. With this basic account you can host multiple domains at no extra cost if you already have them registered elsewhere and can edit the A-Records to redirect (cPanel: parked domains) Otherwhise register them with deltastar directly at a normal rate (€5,99/year).

Where's the catch? Regarding productive customer sites be aware that they are on the market since last year only and they only give (quick) eMail-support, no phone. It's more an association or club than a company and they have a few rules: You "join" and become "member", you don't buy. They have no obligation to let you join. If you terminate the contract you are out once and for all, can't come back later etc. Other than that? Just behave: Don't install programs you don't need and don't misuse their offer (traffic is included btw; download-sites not allowed)

English is no problem (support and cPanel). Payment for people outside of Germany through PayPal. Tell me if you are satisfied and appreciated this tip or more important: if they goof up. -Rudy Zwarg

Costs are $5 a month. They offer plenty of disk space, lots of mysql db, unlimited subdomains and email addresses, ssh access, etc... it seems like the network speed isnt super-duper, but it gets the job done.

Read their "Terms of Service" carefully! "Hostitcheap.com may use customer information to provide customers with information about products and services that might be of interest to the customer, or to enable the customer to take advantage of special partner programs." (spam)

They also constantly use 'Referrer Spam' to boost their Google PR value. They never respond to emails about this issue. Beware of this company, there are plenty of better ones for the money.

Costs are starting at €7.99 a month for 100MB pre-configured Typo3-Webspace up to huge 5GB for just €49.99 a month!

I recently started using A Small Orange which offers generous hosting accounts, such as 400MB storage, 10GB transfer, unlimited MySQL databases, etc. for $5/month. When I switched, I noticed that they feature one click installation of Typo3 through CPanel. Quite a nice feature for just $5/month. And they've proven quite reliable and helpful so far.

This host offers very reasonable prices with unlimited domains, subdomains, MySQL, email, etc using a CPanel interface for convenient control. It has been a great learning tool for me to experiment with different approaches. Includes Fantastico with Typo3 which will automatically install for you. I've found them reliable on the whole -- although customer service can be slow to respond.
